POSITION: Communications Associate/Copywriter (PT) - University Relations


Effective immediately: (PT) Communications Associate/Copywriter, University Relations - New Castle.

Requirements: A Bachelor's degree is required. Journalism major is preferred; will consider communications, English and other writing degrees. Hands-on experience in publication (newspaper, magazine and/or web) is preferred. Three to five years' experience is required with a demonstrated knowledge of a variety of writing styles including but not limited to feature articles, white papers (also known as position papers), press releases and online blogging. Experience in writing for a university or other academic institution is a plus, as is prior experience in or with the media. Must have excellent writing and general communication and organizational skills, especially with regard to client, vendor and media relations. Must be detail oriented within a larger strategic plan and able to work with a diverse population. Must be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Prior knowledge and understanding of AP style news structure, writing and format is required. Incumbent must be able to translate facts into news releases and write complete releases quickly with a limited amount of copy editing required prior to publication and/or distribution.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Gather and fact-check information that will ultimately be distributed as University news and/or marketing content.
  • Write in AP style (and in concurrence with additional University guidelines) for targeted audiences internally and for external distribution to local, regional and national news outlets.
  • Write editorial content for the WilmU Magazine and collaborate with publications staff on assignments based on supervisor approval.
  • Organize, manage and meet timelines for internal and external projects.
  • Learn and become proficient in using the software for internal and external proofing and news distribution.
  • Utilize reporting software and tools to research and analyze audience impact and monitor metrics for bi-weekly, monthly and/or annual reporting.
  • Attend University events in order to generate content stories for distribution. Must also be able to interview subjects, transpose interviews into news elements and stories, as well as coordinate photo shoots or provide appropriate images for every release.
  • Proofread University Relations projects and others as needed.

Hours of Employment: The number of hours associated with this position will not exceed 29 hours per week. The incumbent can work with his/her supervisor to set an appropriate schedule, with work hours falling between Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
