Job Summary
Conceptualizes, writes, edits, and implements integrated communication strategies and packages for various University constituencies, both academic and administrative. Provides editorial direction by coordinating the production of manuscripts, dissertations, thesis analysis, University bulletins, and brochures. This position will primarily be a remote position, but there may be a need for some in-office presence, though not frequently.
Responsibilities
Monthly Basis
- Plan for, draft (writing and designing), receive approval, and distribute monthly newsletter via Campaign Studio
- Draft and distribute other campaign studio communications as needed
- Copyedit and update webpages (text and design) in the university's CMS as needed
- Proofread social media posts before publication
- Copyedit documents from the department chair and other supervisors
- Occasionally interview donors or patients wanting to tell their story
- Maintain Neurology contact lists (30,000+ contacts)
Yearly Basis
Produce the department annual report (approx. 40 pages)
- Create a production schedule accounting for all steps of the editing and publishing process with strict deadlines
- Draft some articles and solicit other drafts from faculty
- Provide substantive edits to faculty pieces; submit edits for faculty review
- Provide copyedits to all text
- Design editorial layout in InDesign
- Create concurrent online department highlight reel
- Provide time for senior faculty review
- Keep department chair involved throughout; provide time for chair's final review
- Liaise with printer
Additional Responsibilities
- Small supervisor component of our Digital Content Creator position
- Assistance with conference planning and support
- Other administrative duties and tasks as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Liberal Education or a related field; two years professional experience in editing and directing publication projects, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); and demonstrated writing, human relations and effective communication skills in order to interpret and present sometimes opposing information in a convincing and non-confrontational manner are required. Master's degree may be preferred in some areas.
Preferences
- Strong grasp of the English language, including grammar, usage, and punctuation (according to The Chicago Manual of Style)
- Ability to follow university's style guide
- Experience with Adobe InDesign
- Strong reading comprehension
- Ability to read academic texts and then rewrite the main ideas for a general audience
- Ability to learn the basics of a content management system (CMS)
- Ability to communicate well and consistently via email
