Position Information

Hiring Department: Division of Marketing and Communications

Posting End Date: Open until filled. This posting may close once a sufficient number of qualified applications have been received.

Hours: 40 hours per week, standard Monday- Friday 8:00am- 5:00pm, flexibility is required on evenings and weekends.

FLSA status: Exempt

Earliest Start Date: As soon as possible.

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. A valid driver's license issued by the State where the applicant resides and insurability as defined in UTS 157 may be required to perform the position's essential functions.

Purpose of Position

The Editorial and Digital Content Specialist is a key member of the content team responsible for developing engaging, brand-aligned stories, copy, and digital content that supports the University's strategic goals. This position writes, edits, and publishes content across a variety of platforms, including websites, social media, email, and print, with a focus on storytelling, accuracy, and audience engagement. The specialist works collaboratively with team members across the marketing and communications division to amplify UTEP's mission, elevate the student experience, and highlight University accomplishments.

The Editorial and Digital Content Specialist will work under the supervision of the Assistant Director, Editorial and Digital Content and is responsible for researching, writing, and editing a variety of written communications and deliverables, including, but not limited to, promotional, marketing and website materials, news and feature stories, publications, social media copy, talking points, and other varied university needs to recruit, enroll, and retain prospective students.

Essential Functions

Write and edit compelling content for multiple platforms including websites, social media, print materials, newsletters, emails, video scripts, digital ads and presentations.

Collaborate with designers, video producers, and photographers to produce multimedia content packages.

Translate complex topics into easily understandable, engaging narratives for a range of internal and external audiences.

Maintain brand tone, voice, and editorial standards across all content.

Participate in the development of editorial calendars and contribute to content planning.

Support social media content creation, including drafting posts, coordinating assets, and publishing content.

Conduct interviews with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and partners to gather material for stories.

Ensure content follows accessibility guidelines and reflects inclusive writing practices.

Monitor performance metrics and adjust content strategy in collaboration with the team.

Assist with proofreading and quality checks for various campaigns and communications.

On occasion, may be called to write press releases, news and feature stories, speeches, op-eds and other communication pieces.

Build and maintain strategic relationships with university and community stakeholders.

Understand University strategic messaging and incorporates those messages across all communication channels.

Ensure all content is accurate and meets the standards of editorial style set by the division in the Editorial Style Guide.

Work collaboratively with the creative team in the development of visuals to accompany written content, including photos, videos, graphics and animations.

Stay abreast of trends and new ideas in marketing communications to keep the University at the leading edge when developing marketing content and strategy.

Collaborate with designers, cinematographers, photographers, and marketing partners to deliver integrated campaigns and cohesive storytelling.

Review and edit written content for clarity, consistency, tone, accuracy, and alignment with UTEP's brand and voice.

Manage content workflows and project timelines to meet deadlines and quality standards.

Analyze engagement metrics and use insights to improve content performance across platforms.

Serve as a content consultant to internal partners, helping units craft effective messaging for their audiences.

Stay current with content marketing trends, social media innovations, and digital storytelling best practices.

Protect and store all digital assets as directed by Marketing and Communication's standard operating procedures.

Ability to write for various formats (e.g., short-form, long-form, marketing, editorial).

Knowledge of AP style and other writing standards.

Ability to be available after hours as needed.

Complies with all State and University policies.

Other duties may be assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: No supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Required Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field.

and

Experience: Two or more years of professional experience in writing, editing, content creation, or related experience to the statement of duties and responsibilities; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with digital publishing tools and social media channels.

Preferred Qualifications: Higher education experience or working knowledge of university audiences, working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, familiarity with SEO writing best practices, and bilingual or multilingual communication skills.
