Job Summary
The Arts & News Editor collaborates with the Digital News Director to edit stories and visual assets for a new online arts hub and event calendar, while also assisting with daily news story editing. This role is essential in ensuring content across multiple media platforms maintains high standards of quality and consistency.
WGCU is Southwest Florida's source for PBS and NPR. A member-supported service of Florida Gulf Coast University, WGCU provides educational programming that inspires, informs and engages our community. Serving all or part of 12 counties in south and Southwest Florida, with five distinct digital TV channels, two FM radio channels, two HD radio channels, and multiple websites, WGCU delivers national and international programming, and develops, produces and delivers relevant, informative and educational local programs to the region.

Job Description
Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
- Edit and coordinate the Southwest Florida online arts calendar and hub, soliciting event information and visual assets.
- Serve as WGCU's liaison to local arts organizations and artists. Promote a comprehensive online resource for regional fine arts.
- Write, edit, and proofread stories for WGCU, ensuring adherence to AP Style.
- Edit and proofread journalists' reports, both in script form and for online publication through WGCU's Content Management System (CMS).
- Regularly produce articles and content for both internal and external publications, including special articles, with final drafts submitted for production.
- Collaborate with writers on revisions and production techniques to maintain consistent style and presentation.
- Plan, create, and manage the content calendar, assigning articles to freelancers and scheduling work phases for publication.
- Ensure all content is clear, consistent, accurate, and in line with editorial standards.
- Review progress, evaluate results, and implement new processes to promote best practices.
- Efficiently manage multiple tasks with tight deadlines.
Other Duties:
- Represents the department at meetings as needed.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Additional Job Description
Required Qualifications:
- This position requires either five years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in English, communication, journalism, public relations or a related area and one years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
- Professional full-time writing experience.
- Proven experience overseeing content from ideation to creation.
- Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher and Outlook).
- Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree from an accredited institution in English, communication, journalism, public relations or a related area.
- Journalism experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods, including alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media.
- Knowledge of AP Style; Public Media Editorial Standards.
- Knowledge of and ability to post photographs to various social media sites.
- Knowledge of marketing techniques and promotional writing styles.
- Knowledge of desktop publishing and basic graphic design/layout.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects within deadlines.
- Excellent spelling, punctuation, grammar, and proofreading skills to write and edit documents for accuracy, consistency of format, and professional appearance and style.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet close deadlines.
- Ability to work successfully as both a member of a team and independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to interact in a professional manner with a diverse group of staff, faculty, students, and the community in a service-oriented environment.
- Ability to analyze problems and develop creative solutions to complex issues.
- Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes an equitable environment.
