Ag Alert, an agricultural newspaper produced by the California Farm Bureau that publishes twice a month, is looking for freelance reporters in different regions of the state to write about farming, ranching and a wide range of agricultural issues. We seek reporters who can craft compelling stories that inform agricultural and broader audiences about the hundreds of crops grown in the state and topics that affect California farmers and ranchersincluding research and innovations in agriculture, water, weather, agricultural pests and diseases, the economy, markets and tradeas well as highlight the work and achievements of Farm Bureau members. Our stories also aim to illuminate agricultural regulations and policies, trends and challenges facing farmers in different corners of the state. In addition to writing, we seek contributors who can take photographs in the field. Contributors should be familiar with A.P. style and basic journalism standards. The starting rate is $250-$350 per story, plus $50 for original, recently taken photos, plus mileage (76 cents per mile is the current IRS standard business mileage rate) up to 75 miles (or more when agreed in advance).
